Chafee. Now in Washington, Linc Chafee is working to fulfill his father's commitment to the people of Rhode Island. He has been named to serve on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee. He has also been appointed chairman of the EPW subcommittee on Superfund, Waste Control and Risk Assessment and is the chairman of the Foreign Relations subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, Peace Corps, Narcotics and Terrorism. In addition, he is a member of the subcommittee on East Asian and Pacific Affairs and the subcommittee on European Affairs. Born in Warwick on March 26, 1953, Linc earned a Bachelor
of Arts degree in Classics from Brown University in 1975 and, as captain of the
wrestling team, received the Francis M. Driscoll Award for leadership,
scholarship and athletics. Upon
graduation, Linc attended horseshoeing school in Bozeman, Montana.
For the next seven years, he worked as a blacksmith at harness race
tracks throughout the United States and Canada. Linc returned home in 1984 and worked at Cranston Print
Works and Rhode Island Forging Steel before joining General Dynamics' facility
at Quonset Point in 1986. A former delegate to the Constitutional Convention and City
Councilman, in 1992, Linc was elected the first Republican mayor of his hometown
in 32 years, and soon earned a reputation as an honest leader who could bring
diverse groups together for the good of the city.
Linc was re-elected three times in Rhode Island's second largest city,
which has only 4,500 Republicans out of 55,000 registered voters.
As Mayor of Warwick, Linc's honest, hardworking approach to
public service helped him move the city toward solid finances, stronger economic
growth, better education and a cleaner environment.
He invested heavily in the city's schools and made Warwick friendlier to
senior citizens by expanding services and implementing new programs, including
evening meals, an on-site health center and transportation services. Linc also
sought innovative economic development and is the driving force behind the
Warwick Station Redevelopment project, which will soon make Warwick the
intermodal transportation center of New England.
Throughout his tenure as mayor, Linc also earned a
reputation as a tireless champion of the environment. Under his leadership, the
City of Warwick purchased 131 acres of land to be preserved as open space --
more than any other administration in the last 40 years – and became the
state’s leader in recycling. His Greenwich Bay Initiative, a long-term program
aimed at restoring one of the state's most precious water bodies to health, has
earned him national recognition from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. As a U.S. Senator, Linc is continuing his work to preserve,
protect and restore our natural resources, here in Rhode Island and on the
national level. In his capacity as
chairman of the Superfund committee, he meets regularly with local, state and
federal officials to address pollution concerns in Rhode Island.
He also voted against shipping thousands of tons of nuclear waste to the
state of Nevada. He is also continuing his work on behalf of our families.
Linc has already pushed for action on a proposed patients’ bill of rights
legislation, secured additional funds for residents during this winter’s home
heating oil crisis, called on President Clinton to incorporate an optional state
Medicaid benefit for women who are diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer, and
introduced legislation to strengthen legislation that will help break the cycle
of illiteracy within America’s families. | Warning: fopen(/home/empascor/public_html/chafeeforsenate.com/cache/lastclean.txt) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/empascor/public_html/chafeeforsenate.com/exchange/ex_func.php on line 41 Warning: fwrite(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/empascor/public_html/chafeeforsenate.com/exchange/ex_func.php on line 42 Warning: fclose(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/empascor/public_html/chafeeforsenate.com/exchange/ex_func.php on line 43 Warning: fopen(/home/empascor/public_html/chafeeforsenate.com/cache/1fe054aaad1f9fca48e96c97d162054f) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/empascor/public_html/chafeeforsenate.com/exchange/ex_func.php on line 128 Warning: fwrite(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/empascor/public_html/chafeeforsenate.com/exchange/ex_func.php on line 129 Warning: fclose(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/empascor/public_html/chafeeforsenate.com/exchange/ex_func.php on line 130 |
